The Eagle Who Thought He Was a Chicken

<>

Once upon a time, long ago, there was a young eagle.

It hatched from its egg in a chicken coop and was raised there from its very first moments. All it ever saw were chickens scratching the ground, digging into the dirt for shade, and clucking in familiar sounds. From them, it learned everything—and came to believe that this was simply how life was meant to be.

As time passed, the eagle grew adept at everything chickens do, despite being, in truth, a very different creature—strong, free, and magnificent. Yet its environment had blurred its true nature.

One day, a great eagle soared above the coop. From the sky, it spotted the eagle raised among chickens, pecking at the ground and imitating their ways. It could hardly believe its eyes.

The great eagle circled overhead again and again. Its shadow frightened the chickens, sending them scrambling back into the coop, while the eagle raised among them stood frozen in confusion. The free eagle observed for days, waiting for the right moment.

Then, one day, the “chicken-eagle” strayed a little too far from the coop. At that instant, the free eagle descended from the sky, cutting off its path. The chickens fled inside, leaving it alone.

The eagle approached and said firmly,

“What are you doing here?

You are an eagle—look at yourself! You are not a chicken. Your place is the sky, not the coop. You were created to fly, to soar high, to feel the wind carrying you, to dive powerfully upon your prey—not to scratch in the dirt.”

The eagle that had lived its life among chickens grew uneasy. It doubted the other’s intentions and feared it meant harm, saying,

“If you are a noble eagle, you won’t hurt me… will you?”

The free eagle replied calmly,

“Of course not. I am here to help you.”

The other said,

“Very well… if I choose to leave, you won’t stop me, right?”

“You are free to choose,” the eagle answered. “I will not block your way.”

The moment the free eagle stepped aside, the other bolted toward the chicken coop and rushed inside. There, it proudly recounted to the chickens how it had outwitted the ‘dangerous eagle’ and saved itself, concluding with confidence:

“That foolish eagle thought I was an eagle just like him!”

— End of the tale —

Though symbolic, this story mirrors the reality of many gifted individuals—especially those who find themselves trapped in toxic or discouraging work environments.

Imagine a talented employee with strong qualifications and great ambition, suddenly surrounded by unmotivated colleagues and a culture that stifles creativity. Gradually, they begin to behave like those around them, suppressing their potential, until they convince themselves that they are merely “average.”

Just like the eagle that believed it was a chicken, such a person may forget their true capabilities—not because they lost them, but because their environment made them doubt them.

The lesson:

Do not let a toxic environment dim your light. If you are an eagle, your place is above the peaks—not in the coop. Beware of circumstances that convince you that you are less than what you were created to be. Seek those who remind you of your wings, not those who comfort you by saying you have none.

A symbolic tale commonly used in self-development and educational contexts, conveying a profound message about identity, belief systems, and the power of environment. It exists in multiple variations, with no known original source.
